First Lutheran

Rooted in the Bible and looking to Christ, we at First Lutheran seek to follow God’s call in this world in conversation with the ancient liturgy and historical confessions of the Church. Gathered as the Body of Christ, we worship God, serve our neighbors, enjoy community fellowship, and deepen faith through education. We understand that doubt and wrestling are part of the journey of faith, and seek to make safe space where life and faith can be honestly engaged.

We are connected with the wider Church as a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Visioning Process

Here at First Lutheran, the visioning team is hard at work exploring who we are as people of God. Their meeting begins and ends in prayer. Currently the team is reviewing the church mission/vision statement and preparing the SWOT analysis which identifies our congregations’ strengths, weaknesses, as well as opportunities and threats. The team will be sharing information with the church council and congregation in the coming months. Please pray for the team - Bill Burrell, Bill Haines, Doris Haines, Myra Lindborg, Karen Rude, and Pr. Carol – in their work.

About Pastor Carol
Pastor Carol Seilhymer is the pastor for the two-point parish of First Lutheran Church in Plains, MT, and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Thompson Falls, MT. This is her first call since graduating in May 2016 from Luther Seminary with a Masters of Divinity with a concentration in Children, Youth and Family (CYF)! She and her husband Steve are excited for the new call in Carol’s life and their journey to Montana together.

Carol is a “second career” person with previous callings in customer service, hotel management, and commercial lines insurance. A common thread among all her careers is her connection with people, and even now when Carol is not studying or working, you will usually find her around people. She loves to talk and listen to the stories of how Christ meets us in our lives, encouraging all of us to make a difference. Not one to be idle, Carol can also be found hanging out with friends—shopping, singing, dancing, knitting prayer shawls, or meeting new people.

She grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee, WI, one of five children. She has been married to Steve for over 30 years, and they most recently resided in Woodbury, MN, with their cat, Aleksei. The states of Connecticut and Washington were home for them before settling in Minnesota. Steve has taken an early retirement from Xcel Energy in Red Wing, MN, and is a committed partner and supporter of Carol’s calling into ministry.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at First Lutheran
"Shawls ... made for centuries universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to fly above their troubles..." Janet Severi Bristow, 1998 (Copyright ©2016)

Prayers shawls are knit, crocheted, or woven by members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry Team, with prayers woven into them as they are created. Prayer shawls can be given to new members or someone undergoing medical procedures; at the death of a loved one or for comfort in times of stress - the possibilities are endless. If you are in need of prayer shawl, or know someone who is, please feel free to pick one up from the church narthex.
